Job Postings

I really wish sometimes that folks who hire people didn't have to post job openings on the open market if they're just looking to fill the spots from inside anyway. It's pretty frustrating normally, but now with things the way they are, it's infuriating and a huge waste of time and energy.

As a frequent job changer, I've discovered a few techniques that ads use to let you know that they're looking to hire from within.

1) they require vast and specific knowledge of their exact custom software- which is used by like 20 people anywhere. Ditto for the need for expertise in the rules and policies of their organization, not just their general field.

2) the education level for the job is lower than is typical across the market for the position advertised

3) weird, estoteric requirements listed as REQUIRED which means they were looking at the real candidate's resume to complete the job description/ad.

4) Response time limited to like a week. Job closes 7 days from posting of ad. To me this says that the one being hired has already submitted the proper paperwork.

I'm sure there are more, but these have helped me out lots. I've actually followed up where I could to see who indeed was hired, and sure enough, it was the inside guy.

Stick to the more generalized ads, the seem to go through rounds of posting. Then customize your resume and cover letter to address the exact requirements of the ad.
It's tough out there. I'm currently in the thick of a multi-week interviewing process, one of five people vying for one position.
